Swinging the Scope Axe in Iraq

Regular readers know that the Scope Axe is one of my favorite Project Management tools. The Scope Axe is that tool that the PM uses to perform a radical scope reduction on a project. That is in danger of failure.

Based on our current predicament in Iraq, lets examine how a hypothetical Kerry Administration might swing the scope axe on the Iraqi Project.

“Chunking Iraq” – Scope from a PM Perspective

“Chunking Iraq” means looking at the Iraq war from a Project Manager’s perspective, and using the scope chunking technique to think about the project scope alternatives available to the war planners.

Last time we talked about different ways to Chunk a project into manageable bites. Some options were by geography; by interface; by user group; by benefits. Can we apply any of these to Iraq?

“Chunking” – A Key Project Management Skill

A wise colleague of mine, who specializes in IT governance issues, observed at breakfast the other day that “Chunking” was a key project management skill.

By “Chunking”, my friend Don means that activity done in the pre-project phase in which the prospective project is divided into “chunks” that are digestible by the IT organization, or the enterprise as a whole.

A PM asks the Why questions

An organization that suffered a disaster around product safety, quality or security of the magnitude of 9/11 would create any number of study groups and panels to get to the bottom of the disaster. Let’s use a well-known quality control technique to get some perspective on 9/11 as a starting place for thinking about the war in Iraq from a Project Managers perspective.
